The University of Vigo has about 260 research groups, whose activity have resulted, in the last three years, in more than 950 projects. Since the year 2000, more than 50 European Projects has been developed by UVIGO research groups (some of them coordinated by UVIGO). Recently, the UVIGO has been awarded as a campus with International Excellence in Marine Science, a notable honour granted by the Spanish Ministry of Education. The UVIGO Economic Faculty includes researchers in Fisheries and Natural Resources Economics.

Contribution to the project: U. Vigo characterizes biological reference points for fisheries management as the steady state solution of dynamic optimal management problem in age-size structured models. Using numerical methods , we develop algorithm that takes into account: i) multi-species age-structured population model which is commonly used by Virtual Population Analysis for fish stock assessment, and ii) economic costs and inter-temporal discounting to relate reference points with the discounted economic profits along optimal trajectories. Main tasks: UVIGO contributes to WP1, 2 and 3.

Description of PIs involved in the project:

  • Dr. Jose-Maria Da-Rocha Alvarez is Associated Professor in economic theory. He has worked on mechanism design, fertility and female labour participation, agriculture and real business cycles and industrial organization. Since 2007 he works in optimal fisheries management with age structured models and participates in STECF working groups His work has been published at Journal of Economic Theory, International. Economic Review, Review of Economic Dynamics, Journal of Regulatory Economics and ICES Journal of Marine Science.
  • Dr. Julia Touza Montero is an environmental economist with a strong interdisciplinary research. She has mainly worked on spatial-temporal models to integrate natural resource management and biodiversity conservation issues, the socioeconomics of plant invasions, and the application of game theory to issues in natural resources. Her work has been published at Environmental and Resource Economics, Natural Resource Modelling, Journal of Environmental Management, Conservation Biology, Diversity and Distributions, and Trends in Ecology and Evolution.
  • Dr. Francisco Javier García Cutrín is Associated Professor in mathematics. His work has been published at Economic Theory, Journal of Mathematical Economics. Dra. María José Gutierrez is Full Professor in economic Theory at Basque Country University. Since 2007 he works in optimal fisheries management with age structured models. Her work has been published at Journal of Environmental and Management, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control and ICES Journal of Marine Science.
