SUMMARY:Planet Under Pressure 2012
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The global scientific community must deliver to society the knowledge necessary to assess the risks humanity is facing from global change. It must provide knowledge of how society can effectively mitigate dangerous changes and cope with changes we cannot manage.
Based on the latest scientific evidence, the London Planet Under Pressure conference will provide a comprehensive update of our knowledge of the Earth system and the pressure our planet is now under. The London conference will focus the scientific community’s and the wider world’s attention on climate, ecological degradation, human well-being, planetary thresholds, food security, energy, governance across scales and poverty alleviation.
The conference will discuss solutions, at all scales, to move societies on to a sustainable pathway. It will provide scientific leadership towards the 2012 UN Rio +20 conference, also in 2012.
Guiding the direction for the conference is the International Council for Science’s five grand challenges for global sustainability research: observations, forecasting, thresholds, governance and economic requirements, and innovation (technological, political and societal). The conference will also support international assessment processes, for example the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the new biodiversity assessment, plus the Millennium Development Goals.
The programme will be designed to attract senior policymakers, industry leaders, NGOs, young scientists, the media, health specialists, and academics from many disciplines.
A new vision for trans-disciplinary research and broader partnerships
The London conference will act as a platform to strengthen and enlarge the global-change research community and mark a move to a new vision for global-change research. Further, the vision is for a conference that connects leading social and natural scientists with business, investors and the development agenda to create a new understanding and environment for tackling global sustainability challenges.
Solutions that cross scales
Working across scales will be a strong theme for the conference. The scientific community will stress that there must be many governance and technological solutions at all levels, from local and national, to regional and global. It will stress that while there are many threats, global change also provides many opportunities.
The event will include strong policy interaction and a dedicated policy day. Through workshops and seminars, delegates will be encouraged to discuss options and solutions to climate change, energy, food security, water, poverty and other pressing issues.

DESCRIPTION:About IWA
A global network for water professionals.
The International Water Association (IWA) is the global network of 10,000 water professionals spanning the continuum between research and practice and covering all facets of the water cycle.
About IWA World Congress on Water, Climate and Energy 2012
Water and energy are critical for our current society and will be of increasing importance in the future. Climate change is forcing us to reassess our energy usage and will have real and substantial impacts on the water cycle. Solving the interlinked challenges of water, climate and energy in a sustainable manner is one of the fundamental goals of this generation. Following on from conferences on Climate Change Adaptation and Water and Energy, the International Water Association is proud to announce the inaugural World Congress on Water, Climate and Energy in 2012.
The Congress will explore the topics of resilient and sustainable cities with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. The challenges of climate change adaptation and incorporating uncertainty into the city vision and infrastructure will be discussed together with the impacts and responses of climate change on water resources. Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, operating in a carbon constrained world and a focus on renewable energy including practical applications and integration in to the energy mix will be covered.
Solutions to these challenges, including the role of technologies and smart networks will also be a central theme. Recognising that technology is only part of the solution the conference will also address the economic, political and regulatory aspects of water, climate and energy.
The congress will attract up to 2,000 international participants for this global event and will feature a large industry presence and trade exhibition.
Submissions for oral and poster presentation are invited on the topics listed below supplemented by invited talks by world experts and political leaders.

SUMMARY:Climate Adaptation Futures: Second International Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2012
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is one of the most important environmental, social and economic issues facing the world today. Despite growing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, some impacts such as higher temperatures, more intense floods, droughts, wildfires, and rising sea levels are now inevitable. We must plan for and adapt to these changes, to minimize the negative impacts and enhance the benefits to natural systems, societies, and human activities and well-being. This challenges decision making at all levels, from individuals to governments, as well as in business and industry.
Co-hosted and convened by the University of Arizona (www.arizona.edu) and by UNEP’s Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA www.provia-climatechange.org), the conference focuses on adaptation to climate variability and change. The conference will bring together researchers, policy makers, and practitioners from developed and developing countries to share insights into the challenges and opportunities that adaptation presents. It will showcase cutting-edge research from around the world, focusing on themes of equity and risk, learning, capacity building, methodology, and adaptation finance and investment. It will explore practical adaptation policies and approaches, and share strategies for decision making from the international to the local scale.
This conference follows on the success of the pioneering Climate Adaptation Futures Conference, co-hosted by Australia’s National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility and the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship in Australia in 2010 with nearly 1,000 participants from around the world. Inspired by this 1st conference we hope to build on the community that came together in Queensland and foster a connected, collaborative and creative international network of adaptation researchers, decision makers and interested citizens.
The conference program includes plenary lectures and panels, paper sessions, posters, and workshops. Conference Registration opens September 5, 2011 with deadline for abstracts January 30, 2012

SUMMARY:European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2013
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:About the conference:
The European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2013 is an initiative of a number of major European research projects. This will be the first European conference which covers the broad range of issues related to climate change adaptation and follows international conferences in Australia (Gold Coast, Queensland) in 2010 and in the United States (Tucson, Arizona) in 2012. This conference will place a greater emphasis on understanding and assessing adaptation in action under the theme integrating climate into action.
European research supported strongly through the various EU Framework Programmes has played a leadership role in furthering the understanding of climate impacts, vulnerability and adaptation and will contribute significantly to the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5) as it did successfully for the AR4. Policymakers at European, national and local levels have been acting on climate adaptation over the past decade, and with greater urgency in the past few years. European business, NGOs and citizens have become engaged in action on adaptation, seeking to integrate climate change into strategies and decisions. International linkages through trade, global policy regimes, development assistance and humanitarian aid also influence European vulnerability and adaptive action.
Scope of the conference:
The main theme of the conference is integrating climate into action. Major topics to be covered will include:
climate vulnerability assessment
risk assessment
economics of adaptation
decision-making under uncertainty
governance of adaptation
adaptation strategies and planning
mainstreaming climate adaptation
adaptation cases studies: organisational, sectoral and regional
monitoring and measuring adaptation
impact and effectiveness studies
role of tools and knowledge in adaptation
communicating impacts, vulnerability and adaptation
For more information see http://eccaconf.eu/index.php/page/Start-2012-04-04

SUMMARY:6th MIM Pan-African Malaria Conference
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The MIM conference is the largest gathering of the malaria community and therefore provides the ideal opportunity to showcase novel findings, innovations and ground breaking research. Since the first MIM conference in Senegal 1997, the global face of malaria has changed considerably, with malaria elimination now a viable option in many African countries. To highlight this paradigm shift, the conference is appropriately themed: “Moving towards malaria elimination: Investing in research and control” and has both plenary sessions and symposia dedicated to this topic.
The conference will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in scenic Durban from the 6th to 11th October 2013. As Durban is a popular tourist destination there is ample accommodation particularly along Durban’s newly re-vamped beachfront area, which is in close proximity to the ICC. We look forward to welcoming you to the 6th MIM conference and Durban!

SUMMARY:Africa Climate Conference 2013
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Africa is the continent most vulnerable to current climate variability and extremes and the one most likely to suffer adverse effects of climate change. Adaptation policies and actions will be most effective if based on the best possible knowledge concerning current and future climate. To achieve this, we must fill the large gaps in our understanding of African climate through scientific research, and ensure that climate research outputs are communicated in a form that is useful and accessible to decision makers.
The Africa Climate Conference 2013, organized under the auspices of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC), will bring together decision-makers and climate researchers, scientists and practitioners from Africa and around the world, to jointly: 1) identify the state of knowledge on the African climate system, recognizing current gaps in climate knowledge; 2) define and drive an African agenda for future climate research that will inform adaptation decisions out to the mid- to end 21st Century.; 3) develop a framework for mainstreaming climate information into decision making, as well as a network of experts who evaluate and interpret this knowledge for practical applications in areas such as agriculture ad food production, water resources management, climate risk management and adaptation planning, etc. The expected outcome from the Conference is a set of concrete research proposals to address the critical gaps in our knowledge of the African climate system, led by regional and national institutions and experts, to provide science-based climate knowledge that will inform decision-making out to the mid- to end 21st Century in Africa in the many sectors affected by climate variability and change.

SUMMARY:International Conference on Regional Climate - CORDEX 2013
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The International Conference on Regional Climate - CORDEX 2013 brings together the international community of regional climate scientists to present and discuss results from WCRP regional climate studies, with a particular emphasis on the CORDEX initiative.
The first day of the meeting will feature two important pre-conference events: a High Level Session with the participation of the European Commissioners for Research & Innovation and for Climate Action where the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) presents key findings from the IPCC Working Group I contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis. This will be followed by a Stakeholder Dialogue focusing on how science-based regional climate information can best serve the needs of regional decision-makers. Both events are open to all the conference participants.
- The second segment of the conference over the following three days is organized around the key scientific results from CORDEX Phase I. A discussion on future priority research areas for the next phase of CORDEX, of other WCRP regional climate initiatives and of major funding programmes – such as the EU FP7 and the future Horizon2020 - will also take place, taking into account the recommendations from the first segment of the conference.

SUMMARY:Resilience 2014: Third International Science and policy conference on the resilience of social and ecological systems
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The objective of Resilience 2014 is to explore and reinforce the multiple links between resilience thinking and development issues. The concepts of Adaptation, Transformation and Development are central and common to several research communities, including Resilience in social and ecological systems, Ecological Economics, Environmental Change, Farming Systems (among others). Focusing on resilience – the capacity to deal with change and continue to develop – but firmly rooted in the belief that a diversity of approaches can inform each other, the conference will offer the opportunity to articulate and debate their specific paradigms, concepts and methodologies. Complex problems require a diversity of approaches that can inform each other, generate a constructive debate, and eventually lead to more suitable solutions. The term resilience is being used more widely in policy circles and policy debates, yet these meanings may be at odds with scientific interpretations of resilience that emphasize change and transformation. During this conference the diverse perspectives on resilience held by representatives from government, large international organizations, the business sector and other major actors from various countries will add to the academic debate on the challenges facing social development.

SUMMARY:Establishing an African network of research scientists working on neglected tropical diseases
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Since 2008 the European Foundations Initiative on Neglected Tropical Diseases (EFINTD) has provided Post-Doctoral Fellowships for 23 African researchers for locally-driven applied research in African research institutions, with 60 PhDs and Masters students also being trained as part of their work. Their research activities range from basic research (including development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics) to implementation and social science research.
EFINTD is also supporting the establishment of an African research network for NTDs (ARNTD). This is an African initiative by African NTD researchers, the founding members being EFINTD research Fellows. The four objectives of ARNTD include:
• Creating a sustainable collaborative network for NTDs between researchers, policy makers and implementers on the African continent;
• Promoting NTD research and control in Africa through advocacy and resource mobilisation;
• Stimulating and strengthen NTD research capacity in Africa;
• Disseminating evidence-based information on NTDs at all levels of the African health care system.
ARNTD aims to open this platform to African NTD fellows from other funding initiatives. As the first step in this a meeting is being held 20th-23rd October 2014 at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany to discuss and review the activities of the ARNTD and explore synergies with other funding organisations. It will provide a forum for networking with the EFINTD fellows and fellows sponsored by other funding organisations researching into NTDs as they interact in soft skills acquisition workshops and discussion groups. The activities of the ARNTD will be reviewed and actions prioritized for 2014/15.
We are seeking African researchers, working on NTDs, who are interested in being part of ARNTD.
Contact Trudi O’Neill oneillhg@ufs.ac.za if you are interested in attending.

SUMMARY:HEALTHY FUTURES Decision Support Workshop
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:HEALTHY FUTURES will hold a Decision Support Workshop on November 18 to 20, 2014 in Nairobi to address climate change and disease impact issues for schistosomiasis and malaria. The workshop will develop decision support frameworks for the two diseases to guide action-oriented decision-making on control of these two diseases over the coming decades.
The decision support frameworks will be designed and built by the workshop participants: decision-makers, technical experts and key implementation personnel. The intent is to develop a way forward that is practical, scientifically sound and socially appropriate. The project has developed insights into the future impact of climate change on the epidemiology and impact of the two diseases. Changes in the distribution and intensity of these two diseases are anticipated that will have important health, socio-economic and institutional impacts. This new knowledge needs to be integrated with issues from the field and practical experience to adapt and enhance control programs to meet future challenges.

SUMMARY:International Conference Climate Services 4
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The fourth International Conference on Climate Services is hosted by the Uruguayan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, with support from the World Bank and the Climate Change Agriculture & Food Security theme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. It will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay from December 10-12 at the Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel. The conference will explore the theme of decision support systems; it will also engage a range of other topics including health, water, disasters, grassland management, and the evaluation of climate services.
Decision support systems
While climate affects all aspects of our lives, the decisions we make are rarely based entirely, or even predominantly, on climate information. Rather, a range of factors must be considered as we make plans that shape our countries, companies, and communities. Decisions support systems offer a way to meet this complex challenge – combining different kinds of information into a single framework and assisting decision makers by supporting, rather than replacing, their judgement. By contextualizing climate information within this framework, decision support systems can help us apply climate information to pressing real-world problems. But while decision support systems have shown to be useful in advancing climate risk management, many questions remain, including what sorts of questions are these systems best suited for? How can we design them to best communicate uncertainty, and to what extent can they be linked to national-level policy decisions? These and other questions will be explored in at the fourth International Conference on Climate Services.

SUMMARY:Gordon Conference on “Tropical Infectious Diseases: Challenges, Opportunities and Successes”
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The 2015 Gordon Research Conference on "Tropical Infectious Diseases: Challenges, Opportunities and Successes", will present cutting edge research on the most prevalent and medically important tropical infectious diseases (TIDs). Similar to earlier GRCs, the intent of this conference is to gather a multidisciplinary community of scientists for the purpose of discussing basic and field-based research with translational implications in TIDs. The conference will particularly emphasize participation by junior and senior scientists from disease endemic countries.
The 2015 Conference will include sessions that focus on important TIDs, such as malaria, arboviral diseases and poverty-associated neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). In addition, thematic sessions, including management of parasite drug and vector insecticide resistance, status of vaccine development efforts for TIDs, advancements in vector biology for TID control and diseases targeted for elimination by 2020, will be highlighted. For each session, invited speakers who are at the forefront of their respective fields will discuss how progress made at the bench is being translated to actions in the field. Speakers will emphasize interventions based on treatment, vaccination, or interruption of transmission cycles in vectors or reservoir hosts.
An important goal of the Gordon Conference is to attract junior scientists and graduate students (including those from disease endemic countries) to present their work and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. As such, new to this year’s conference will be a Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) that will take place prior to the main GRC. The GRS will serve as a platform that allows selected student and postdoctoral researchers to give oral presentations. Additionally, at the GRS junior participants will have the opportunity to present at a poster session and network with other conference attendees.

SUMMARY:Keystone Conference on “Co-Infection: A Global Challenge for Disease Control”
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:This Keystone Symposia meeting will focus on our current understanding of synergism/antagonism among pathogens causing common co-infections. In doing so it will bring together leading researchers and their knowledge of immune responses in co-infected individuals, co-infection immunoepidemiology, modeling of co-infections to predict disease and infection outcomes, and the specific challenges that co-infection presents to vaccine design strategies, and effective application of chemotherapy. This diversity of scientific disciplines will together address the impacts of co-infection, particularly in the context of the Neglected Tropical Diseases that are prevalent in many low- and middle-income countries. For example, in some of the poorest parts of the world, HIV, TB, leprosy, HTLV, malaria, dengue, and chronic helminth infections are co-endemic. To find the understanding and the means to effectively tackle the diverse clinical and public health problems of co-infection, we need to combine information derived from basic hypothesis-lead research, descriptive epidemiology and new computational modeling techniques. The goal of this symposium will be to broaden and deepen our understanding of within-host and population level interactions between different co-infecting pathogens and propose appropriate multidisciplinary strategies to move towards clinical and public health solutions, including the delivery of effective vaccination and chemotherapy.

SUMMARY:Keystone Conference on “The Arthropod Vector: The Controller of Transmission”
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION: The Scientific Program proposed represents breadth and depth of current hot topics in vector biology. Vector innate immunity studies have been ongoing for about a decade and this field has matured and helped our understanding of the complex interactions between pathogens and vectors. The vector microbiome represents a novel, nascent area of research with great promise for the development of novel prevention and control approaches. Vector saliva has been known to contain powerful biomolecules, but it is only recently that we have begun to understand the translational potential of these molecules. Furthermore, vectors also ingest various bioactive factors of human origin which affect the development and survival of pathogens within the vector.
Purpose of the meeting:
• Integrate the multiple levels of influence on disease transmission by the arthropod vector under a single meeting.
• Access the extensive knowledge of innate immunity gained in Drosophila to inform vector studies, incorporate the dynamic and cutting edge research on the role of the microbiome, and explore how the biologically and immunologically active components of saliva influence transmission.
• Bring together researchers from multiple scientific areas relevant to vector-borne pathogen transmission and promote the discussion and exploration of multidisciplinary approaches and collaborations to address the challenge of arthropod-transmitted diseases.
• Translate immunological and microbiological insights into new approaches for combating vector-borne diseases, including manipulation of the microbiome and identification of novel, non-traditional vaccine targets (e.g., arthropod saliva proteins).

SUMMARY:Our Common Future Under Climate Change
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The International Scientific Conference “Our Common Future under Climate Change” will take place at UNESCO (Paris) in July 2015.
This four-day conference will be the largest forum for the scientific community to come together ahead of the 21st UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP21), which will be hosted by France in December 2015 (“Paris Climat 2015”). Building on the results of IPCC 5th Assessment Report (AR5), the Conference will address key issues concerning climate change in the broader context of global change. It will offer an opportunity to discuss solutions for both mitigation and adaptation issues. The Conference will also welcome Side Events organized by different stakeholders.
The conference is organized under the umbrella of ICSU, Future Earth, UNESCO and major French research institutions, with the support of the French Government.
The Conference has four overarching objectives:
1 - Provide state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on climate change, one year after the release of IPCC AR5: physical basis of climate change, impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, mitigation, storylines and scenarios. Special emphasis will be placed on explaining, translating and disseminating the key results of IPCC AR5 and major developments thereafter. This Conference offers the opportunity to progress in our understanding of the multiple interactions between climate change, the geosphere, the biosphere and human societies, at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Special attention will be given to trans-disciplinary research and to emerging concepts.
2 - Explore a wide range of pathways combining climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable development. Building on forecasts, storylines and scenarios, the Conference will discuss uncertainties; identify areas of consensus, and map controversies while taking stock of the multiple connections to development and environmental challenges within a large diversity of local, national and regional contexts.
3 - Assess the potential for evidence-based solutions to climate change challenges. Scientific evidence will be assessed to explore a large array of potential technological, social and institutional solutions to some of the challenges created by climate change. Potential solutions will be discussed in connection with the broader challenges of sustainable development, environmental conservation, equity, and cultural diversity
4 - Contribute to a science-society dialogue. En route to COP21, the Conference will offer all interested parties (negotiators, policy-makers, businesses, NGOs, public at large) an up-to-date panorama of the insights that science can provide on climate change and how to tackle it. With the post-2015 agenda in sight, the Conference also offers a venue for scientists, policy-makers, businesses and NGOs to debate the research agenda for the coming years (both via the conference itself and side events organized by stakeholders).
