SUMMARY:Micro B3 Summer School 2014: From sampling to analyzing microbial diversity & function
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Multi disciplinary summer school focussing on standardized sampling and analysis for OSD participants within the Micro B3 training pipeline.
This summer school is organized as a two-week interactive training from Tuesday 27 May to Friday 6 June 2014 at the HCMR on Crete, Greece. Every day a high-level lecturer will share expertise with the students, focusing on standards & methods, with theory in the morning and interactive practical work in the afternoon.
The summer school focuses on preparing and planning integrated sampling work and data flows, taking into account some legal aspects, with a focus on bioinformatic and oceanographic tools. The group will perform data and sample management based on the use of enrichments for analyses during the course, on existing (OSD) data sets and the OSD handbook. Trainees will learn how to decide on using methods and standards to address their research questions in the fields of plankton diversity, ecology and function, including biotechnological applications.

SUMMARY:Gordon Research Conference: "Marine Microbes: Small Microbes, Big Data"
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The Marine Microbes Gordon Research Conference will be held in conjunction with the Marine Microbes Gordon Research Seminar.
The theme of the sixth Gordon Conference in marine microbes is "Small microbes, big data". The Conference will present and discuss cutting-edge research on marine microbiology with a focus on the challenges and opportunities of integrating and synthesizing diverse datastreams to elucidate the role of marine microorganisms in driving global biogeochemical cycles. The Conference will feature a wide range of topics relevant to the broad diversity of marine microbes (Bacteria, Archaea, phytoplankton, protists, viruses) such as single cell techniques, organism specific and community wide "omics" approaches, ocean observing and time series, individual based and global scale modeling, microbial interactions, population biology, evolution, and responses to a changing environment on short and long time scales.
The Conference will bring together the international community of marine microbiologists. It will feature presentations of unpublished work by investigators at the forefront of the field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field.

SUMMARY:Event: Third Pilot Ocean Sampling Day 2013
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Next year on June 21 2014 will be the official Micro B3 Ocean Sampling Day when samples of ocean water from numerous sites will be taken for genome-based diversity analysis of marine bacteria.
To practise for this official Micro B3 Ocean Sampling Day now on June 21st 2013, the third
OSD-pilot will be taking place with already more than 50 sites participating world wide.
Sampling needs to be done in summer and winter to get the peaks and troughs of marine
microbial diversity on both hemispheres. At least one litre of sea water is sampled in a
standardized manner, including environmental parameters, filtered according to standard
procedure, sent to the Smithsonian Institute (USA), split in two to be archived and sent for
DNA sequencing for phylogenetic information (and for potential metagenomic shotgun
sequencing) at Argonne National Lab (USA).
Dr Mesude Bicak, research associate at the Oxford Research Centre and one of the
coordinators says: “We are working in an open collaborative way and so we are sharing initial DNA quantities with everyone in the consortium. This is in keeping with the nature of this collaboration and the fact that we will soon be formalizing all of the participants into the OSD Consortium. We now have a draft data policy as well that supports the strongest sense of open and collaborative data sharing.”
Anyone interested in taking part in OSD 2014 can register through the blog:
http://oceansamplingday.blogspot.co.uk/ where you will also find regular updates

SUMMARY:Summer Workshop: "Predictive Microbiology Modelling in Foods"
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:“PREDICTIVE MICROBIOLOGY MODELLING IN FOODS 2014” is a four-day SUMMER WORKSHOP that will take place from the 9th to 12th September in Portugal and will provide participants with an excellent opportunity to learn the different approaches to mathematically describe the dynamics of microorganisms in foods.
The OBJECTIVE of the workshop is to provide a clear understanding of how to obtain accurate estimates on growth, death and survival of microorganisms in foods, including food-borne pathogens, as affected by intrinsic food properties and processing environments. The workshop will demonstrate how the current computer programmes of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, can be used to predict the behaviour of the pathogens in foods.

SUMMARY:"Glimpses at Pan-Genomes" Workshop
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The Pan-genome paradigm has transformed our way to understand microbes and the rapid development of sequencing technologies makes pan-genomic studies accessible to most laboratories. However, the scientific community is still adjusting to use and interpretation of this kind of data. It is not only a problem of data analysis (bioinformatics), it implies a change in the ways to identify objectives and to interrogate data to discover biologically relevant questions and to answer them. The aim of this workshop is to gather leading genomic microbiologists with others in different stages of applications and commitment to the new understanding of microbial genomes.
The workshop will cover the following key topics:
- Genomics contribution to Microbiology
- Pangenomic microbiology
- Evolutionary genomics
- Ecological genomics and metagenomics
- Pangenome of phages
Further information can be found at http://egg.umh.es/course3.html

SUMMARY:8th International Algae Congress
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Microalgae contain large amounts of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, all of which can be used for different high end applications. Residual products can be sold as biofuels, reducing the cost of production. Biorefinery can ensure that quality products can be isolated and after that sold. Currently, many eyes are the biorefinery process and the developments aimed to obtain financial viable applications. During the 8th International Algae Congress these developments will be discussed.
Many pilots have started, the 8th IAC14 likes to give an overview of all European initiatives, what is the size and value of the starting "industry"? And finances are needed for upscaling, how to obtain them? What about the regulations and the cultivation rights for the upcoming business? Good advises of experts will be given during the two days in Belgium (Ghent).
The 8th International Algae Congress in Belgium will also address new developments in algae production and harvesting. Most ongoing projects utilize the classical biotechnology method. The cultivation of algae with CO2 and a food source. What possibilities does the new biotechnology bring to algae cultivation? Are we going to grow algae in the dark in the future in order to reduce costs?
