SUMMARY:ICES Annual Science Conference 2010
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The ICES Annual Science Conference 2010 will focus on coastal zones, one of three major thematic axes of the ICES Strategic Plan. During the 19 theme sessions, oral presentations and posters will cover such topics as contaminants, benthic indicators, aquaculture, bioinvasions, harmful algal blooms, biodiversity, operational oceanography, integrated coastal-zone management, and marine coastal planning. Eight theme sessions will focus on fishery research to increase scientific knowledge and lead to higher levels of expertise. The Honorable Dr Jane Lubchenco, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere & NOAA Administrator, gave the opening lecture titled “Managing marine biodiversity: an emerging consensus”.
A special theme session about the future organization of research surrounding the ERA-NETS (Marifish, Seas-Era) and an EU marine joint programming initiative was developed. Because 2010 is the international year of the biodiversity, a special evening session presented the results of the programme “Census of Marine Life”, and concluded with a showing of the film “Oceans” by Jacques Perrin.
Øivind Bergh from IMR (Norway), coordinator of the project, presented an abstract and a poster on COEXIST during this event (See below). The abstract can be consulted in the page 17 on the following link:

SUMMARY:Aquaculture Europe 2010
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Aquaculture Europe 2010 was organised by the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) and was held at the Centro de Congressos da Alfândega, Porto, Portugal from October 5-8, 2010. AE2010 was attended by 1072 participants (778 full conference delegates) from 55 countries and is a record attendance for an Aquaculture Europe stand-alone event.
AE2010 put the focus on the future of marine aquaculture in Europe, at a time when the European Commission has published its Communication on the strategy for the development of European aquaculture. Although global aquaculture continues to grow significantly, production growth in Europe is considerably lower. The challenge is to demonstrate sustainable development, while producing products that are competitive with those originating from other regions in the global market.
AE2010 addressed many topics related to island, coastal and ocean aquaculture, but also
covered the production of freshwater species. Parallel conference sessions included landbased systems, estuarine, coastal lagoon, coastal and offshore aquaculture, encompassing many species from shellfish to fish to marine plants. AE2010 also considered the specific issues related to production on Mediterranean islands and in Europe’s Outermost Regions.
Øivind Bergh from IMR (Norway), coordinator of the project, presented an abstract and a
poster on COEXIST during this event (See below). The abstract can be consulted in the book of abstracts of this event, available at: http://www.ices.dk/products/CMdocs/CM-2010/2010%20Abstracts/2010%20Abstracts.pdf

SUMMARY:Coastal Futures 2011
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The programme for 18th Coastal Futures Janaury conference has now been prepared: http://www.coastms.co.uk/conferences/442
The conference continues the tradition of providing a comprehensive and topical briefing with 31 speakers covering a very wide range of issues
The Government's thinking
One of the main themes of this year will be the new Government's style and approach that mark a major change from the previous administration including :
The Government programme - both in terms of implementation of the Marine & Coastal Access Act and also new legislative initiatives like the Localism Bill and Natural Environment White paper
The style of new Government's approach will also be touched on by many papers - the ideology (Big Society) and financial cut backs
Government are still committed to a wide ranging programme of adaptation and mitigation to climate change affecting coastal communities and the fast growing renewables industry
Caroline Spelman the Defra Minister has recently reaffirmed the Government's commitment to MCZ's and this major body of work figures prominently in their programme
Defra in their Structural reform plan are also fully committed to Reform of the Common Fisheries policy as well major European Directives
The conference will provide a good opportunity to get your head around how the new Government are going to operate in the Coastal and Marine Environment

SUMMARY:Marine Spatial Planning and Transnational Partnership Working in the Irish Sea Stakeholder Workshop
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:In parallel with the development of an Integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union and the implementation of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive each of the six administrations that border the Irish Sea are currently in the process of establishing new arrangements for marine spatial planning. This free-to-attend workshop will bring together those directly involved in these activities as well as a cross-section of stakeholders who have an interest in the Irish Sea. It aims to provide an opportunity to gain an overview of the new arrangements and to explore stakeholder views on the future development of transnational partnership working to support co-ordinated marine spatial planning in the Irish Sea region.
The morning session will start by setting the scene with a roundup of marine spatial planning developments in the Irish Sea region and contributions from DG Mare related to European Union maritime policy and from someone closely involved with transnational partnership developments in the Baltic Sea. The will be followed by a workshop session where delegates will explore the motivations for transnational partnership working in the Irish Sea and the potential benefits and challenges that might be associated with this.
The afternoon session will consider alternative strategies for transnational partnership working and through workshop discussion will explore stakeholders views on the benefits and challenges associated with different options.
The output will be a discussion note drawing together stakeholder inputs from the day which will be considered at a second workshop which will be held in late spring 2011.

SUMMARY:AQUACULTURE USER CONSULTATION: Defining Requirements for the Future ESA Aquaculture Project
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:More information: http://earth.eo.esa.int/workshops/Aquaculture2011/index.php?page=119&type=s
The aquaculture sector has been growing rapidly during the last decades, and is expected to play a continuously larger role in supplying the food needed for an increasing world population. During the same period, satellite monitoring of coastal waters and of coastal land-use has been steadily progressing, increasing the quality of the estimations of an increasing number of parameters. Various projects have attempted to develop satellite data applications in support of aquaculture, however, most often as a limited activity inside a wider project, and exploiting only some of the Earth Observation capacities that could benefit aquaculture.
It is therefore timely to channel state-of-the-art competence from the various, relevant Earth Observation technologies and techniques into one activity dedicated to aquaculture exclusively, in order to take a next, important step towards operational services for e.g.: locating optimal sites for aquaculture; monitoring production conditions and threats (algal blooms, jellyfish, ...); monitoring environmental impacts
The European Space Agency (ESA)’s future Aquaculture project will aim at developing, demonstrating and validating information services in support of aquaculture management exploiting state-of-the-art remote sensing, modelling and data integration methods. It will address needs of users in Europe and internationally, including: Companies directly involved in aquaculture production; Institutional and industrial providers of products and services to the aquaculture sector; Government agencies and administrations in charge of the aquaculture sector; Government agencies, administrations and NGOs involved in the monitoring of environmental effects of aquaculture.
ESA Aquaculture User Consultation meeting was organised by ESA in Oslo, hosted by the Norwegian Space Centre, during 1 ½ days from 31st March to 1st April 2011. The main objective of the meeting was to define a detailed set of user requirements for the future ESA Aquaculture project, including priority information products and services and priority regions of interest through:
• Presentations of user requirements
• Presentations of state-of the-art of remote sensing applications for aquaculture
• Discussions
• Working sessions for elaborating user requirements and other recommendations to ESA for the Aquaculture project
The meeting was therefore organised as a ½ day of presentations and discussion of user requirements, ½ day of presentations of the state-of-the-art of remote sensing applications of relevance for aquaculture, and a final ½ day for defining requirements in parallel sessions and presenting and discussing them, an ending up with a written record of the requirements and other recommendations to ESA for the planned project.
Vicki O’Donnell from UCC (Oreland), partner of the project, represented the COEXIST project in this event. She also distributed the COEXIST brochure to the attendants. The workshop report is available in: http://due.esrin.esa.int/meetings/meetings253PRE.php

SUMMARY:AQUA NOR FORUM 2011
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:AQUA NOR FORUM 2011 : « Upscaling Aquaculture systems, Optimising system size for enhanced productivity with environmental equilibrium".
Trondheim, Norway
(August 17-18)
The European Aquaculture Society (EAS) in cooperation with the Nor-Fishing Foundation, SINTEF and CREATE, organizes this forum, every second AQUA NOR in Trondheim. It provides a forum for science, industry, consumers and policy makers to review developments in the aquaculture sector and to discuss the key issues that affect those developments. The 2011 edition will focus one of the critical constraints to the development of aquaculture in Europe – notably access to sites with high and sustainable water quality to ensure high quality aquaculture products and limit the coastal impact. By up-scaling production systems an increase in productivity can be obtained for any specific site; but this must be compliant with legislation, fish welfare, husbandry and especially to the environmental impacts of increased production systems. Communications and discussions will discuss the applications of this concept to the following systems:
- Upscaling land-based systems: water treatment in large scale systems; faeces removal; growth retardation and cohort interaction and non-native fish for local markets),
- Upscaling marine cage production: cage and equipment design and monitoring of the biomass, including challenges in submergible cages; delivering feed and medication; farming intelligence and the ideal cage size)
- Upscaling the ecological approach to production: challenges to the up-scaling of IMTA operations; ecological feed issues on substitution for carnivorous species and the potential of seaweed culture). More information and online registration (including hotel bookings) is now available but if you intend to participate, be quick as hotel rooms go fast in the attractive city of Trondheim – and especially during Aqua Nor!

SUMMARY:The case for Maritime Spatial Planning: efficient resource management for sustainable growth
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Location: Brussels, Belgium
Organiser: Unit E1
Join us on 26 March 2012 in Brussels for an international conference on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), hosted by Ms Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for maritime affairs and fisheries.
High level representatives from the European Union and Third countries, public authorities, representatives from maritime industries and NGOs will have an opportunity to share their experiences on MSP in the European Union and from around the world, and to reflect on how they want to see it develop in the future.
Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), as promoted by the EU integrated maritime policy, is crucial for creating an environment in which the maritime economy can grow in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem. Transparency, stability, predictability and reduced transaction costs are the factors that encourage and accelerate investments – and are among the benefits that MSP can bring.

SUMMARY:Conference Dynamic Deltas
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:Coastal protection is a world wide issue that asks for huge investments to sustain safety, economy and ecology in low lying rural Delta areas under climate change. Productivity of rural deltas has always been the basis for a rich nature and for human food production. Delta areas support about half the world’s human population and are vulnerable for sea level rise, extremes in river runoff and precipitation, changes in sediment accretion, and population growth or shrink. The dimensions of the Delta problems ask for a novel approach that is based on combining visions, ideas, knowledge and technologies.

SUMMARY:Littoral 2012
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:LITTORAL 2012: Coasts of tomorrow
With increasing pressure from both land and sea, understanding coastal processes and adapting governance and management to present and future challenges is crucial. In coastal regions, typically a large number of users and functions come together. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) has been developed over the past two decades to combine functions, users and decision levels in a sustainable way. However, with the acceleration of global change, the economic crisis and the demographic shift, a new and improved ICZM is needed to safeguard our coasts of tomorrow. During the Littoral 2012 conference, four themes that will shape the coasts of tomorrow will be addressed.
The conference is open to all professionals and stakeholders dealing with coastal issues and will give access to cutting edge science, real-life examples and a high-level debate, and will give you the opportunity to network with scientists, practitioners, policy advisors, administrators and industry from all over the world.
In the framework of this conference COEXIST will present a poster where the main results obtained so far within the project will be described.

SUMMARY:COEXIST Project Meeting
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:The COEXIST project is now in its final phase of development, and its partners will meet in Rome, Italy, on 13-14 March 2013 to discuss its results.
The goal of the COEXIST project is to provide a roadmap to improve integration, sustainability and cooperation across the diverse activities now taking place in the European coastal zone.
Geographically diverse case studies, representing the various conditions and combinations of activities in European coastal areas, have been analysed, and the main conflicts and synergies between the activities carried out in these areas have been identified. This partner meeting will establish how these results will be incorporated in guidelines for best practice in spatial planning to integrate fisheries, aquaculture and further demands in the coastal zone.
For further information on the COEXIST project visit www.coexistproject.eu, or contact Emma Bello Gomez, Project Officer, emma@aquatt.ie.

SUMMARY:Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning - Including Applications for Sustainable Aquaculture Development
DTSTAMP:20141118T110401Z
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend this session that is of great relevance to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Coastal and Ocean Management Strategy and Policy Framework plus the Strategic Aquaculture Plan renewal process and sustainable aquaculture sector growth. Regulators and the variety of interests and users of coastal and ocean space would benefit from the session. A special session in COEXIST findings will be run by Jeremy Gault from UCC.
Can Maritime Spatial Planning provide the mechanism to realize the economic potential of aquaculture (and other industrial sectors) from our oceans – experiences from CO-EXIST and other European projects – Jeremy Gault, University College Cork – Coastal and Marine Research Centre (Ireland)
Recent findings from the COEXIST (EU – 7th Framework) project, unsurprisingly, revealed that the aquaculture sector was concerned about the potential level of conflict with existing industries such as fisheries and tourism and development of new industries - specifically marine renewable energy. This is indicative of the current level of spatial pressure on our coastal and marine environment and the potential for conflict - both of which will only be exacerbated by economic policies to derive higher return from the marine domain and the societal need to meet increasing food and energy demands.
Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) is being championed as the approach that will reduce conflict and unlock the full economic potential of key sectors including aquaculture. However, historical attempts at integrated management for marine sectors have had limited success and MSP is largely untested being in the initial stages of implementation and this presentation will consider whether it can succeed where other management initiatives have failed.
